Star Chosen sci-fi novel: 20 Years in the Making

Tokenization: The Final Frontier

Tokenization: The Final Frontier is Rare Digital Art by Joe Chiappetta

This animated sci-fi image will soon be available as rare digital art on the Grand pixEOS Art Gallery. I drew it first as a quick sketch on my big old Samsung Galaxy Note 3. That's an over-sized phone that came with stylus and I have used it as a mini drawing pad reliably for almost 6 years. It seems fitting that a somewhat space-age handheld device was used to create this art inspired by space-age classic science fiction themes. Old shows such as Star Trek and others have become famous for introducing handheld devices that were decades ahead of their time.

Why would anyone want to collect rare digital art? We are speaking of monetizing digital art, which is an innovation ahead of its time--yet here now. Rare digital art is deserving of more attention and I do think someone should win a Nobel Prize in Economics for its inception. In fact, the benefits and interesting traits of rare digital art are worth listing all together. The below list can be used to help art collectors see the benefits of collecting rare digital art.

Characteristics of Rare Digital Art

  • Digital art can be issued in a limited supply (similar to limited-edition prints)
  • Instant or near-instant sales powered by the speed of blockchain
  • International market exposure
  • Digital art becomes a personal collectible item
  • Ownership data available to everyone
  • Ownership of digital art is transferable
  • Creators and collectors can set flat rate for art sales or accept bids
  • Royalties for secondary sales can be written into the blockchain so artist automatically receives a percentage of resale price each time a collector sells that artist's work to another collector
  • Artwork is as durable as the Internet, the blockchain that holds the art data, and the server(s) that stores the image
  • Art collectors can easily publicize their collection
  • Collectors can show people their collection in person from their own phones
  • Artists can easily keep track of art with release dates and any other data included in that art's release description
  • All sales final: non-reversible
  • Technology prone to attract new audiences, including younger audiences
  • Typically lower price of art (less art material cost) makes collecting art more accessible to wider range of collector income levels
  • Rare digital art has overlap with rare gaming items, increasing the potential for new art audiences
  • Art can be static image or an animated piece
  • Artists are more likely to trade limited-editions with other artists
  • Artists can host giveaway art events without shipping or physical production costs
  • Physical art can be bundled with rare digital art as an option
  • Cryptocurrency price volatility may be a good thing (if crypto price goes up), or a bad thing. Yet even if a bad thing (as in the price of crypto goes way down) the artists involved still gain market exposure to new audiences.
I am sure there are more interesting traits to list about rare digital art, but these stand out right away. As can be seen, blockchain has opened up a whole new market for artists and collectors. Prior to blockchain technology, digital art images had very limited market venues for artists to release them in limited quantities. Art collectors have a hard time being interested in owning such art since images on the internet are easily copied. So there was no way to prove art ownership. Yet all that has changed!

Yes, any user can still simply copy and paste images onto their own devices. But that is not the point. Now, for collectors who want a way to collect digital art directly from an artist through an authorized and collectible means, the technology is here today to make that happen while also tracking ownership and date of sale. Furthermore, collectors have an authorized means of reselling that rare digital art to a new owner on the blockchain.

Physical art trade and exchange has always been possible. Now digital art trade and exchange is also possible. Transfer or ownership, bidding, discounting, limited supply... all those features that the physical art world has enjoyed have now come to rare digital art.

What Makes Rare Digital Art Possible?

Rare digital art means that on a blockchain, the cryptocurrency (or tokens) issued through these networks are now able to be linked to specific artworks. The artwork details get coded and recorded on the blockchain. This data is designed to last for the lifetime of that blockchain. In the same way that cryptocurrency creators can specify how many units of their cryptocurrency they will release to the world in a limited supply, and which users own which cryptocurrencies, the same features are now happening with digital art.

For example, on the Bitcoin blockchain, the total supply of Bitcoin has been coded to be 21 million. That means only 21 million Bitcoins will ever be in existence... and that's it. In similar fashion, digital art can now be linked to tokens on a blockchain that have a limited supply.

So take the above sci-fi art image I created. When I release it on a blockchain through pixEOS, it will be written into the code to issue this art linked to a limited supply of only 1 token. This is where the "rare" from the term "rare digital art" comes from. Once issued, only 1 image of "Tokenization: The Final Frontier" will ever be available to be bought and sold on that blockchain. Many can be copied infinitely. But only one copy can be monetized--the one image that I link to the blockchain, to be collected by only once collector at a time. Perhaps that one person will be you!

That is why I, along with many other rare digital artists, have "set phasers to tokenize!"

Star Chosen Book Review by Anna Chiappetta

My youngest daughter (currently a pre-teen) wrote a brief review of Star Chosen, my epic sci-fi novel for all ages.
Star Chosen science fiction novel book by Joe Chiappetta

STAR CHOSEN BRINGS CREATIVITY AND FUN INTO THE FUTURE

Review by Anna Chiappetta

From the first sentence, the Star Chosen sci-fi novel hooks you in and won't let you out until your light years into space. The book is accessible for all readers: adults, teens, and even kids. There are so many parts in this book that make you never want to let go of it. Every character  has a unique personality; some characters like Darla, a powerful CEO, are mysterious and some like Archilli are just plain tough.

Star Chosen will make you want to jump into the future. One thing I really love about the story is that it blends so many genres together: science fiction, of course, plus action, adventure, suspense, mystery, Christianity, and even a little bit of romance. I was intrigued in the beginning when a woman leaves her home with her baby on her husband's stolen space ship in the middle of the night. I really wanted to skip ahead to find out what happened to these characters.

Also on the suspense side, the novel stretches out the scene were Geo (a mysterious space thug) falls out of his fancy convertible space ship and Archilli tries to catch him while freefalling. It was cool the way the action played out: it really felt like you were falling with them, complete with strange alien purple trees coming from below.

I know it sounds kind of weird and it has a bit of a nerdy twist to it but that is what makes it cool. This tale has so many twists and turns, you can't wait until the next page. Star Chosen is an unpredictable novel. You can never guess what is going to happen in this futuristic fun ride.

Original Pencil Cover Art from Star Chosen Novel

Black and white original Star Chosen novel cover art by Joe Chiappetta

Pencil drawing on 8.5" x 11" paper by Joe Chiappetta 2010

Order black and white original pencil cover art for Star Chosen novel

Here is the original black and white cover art from my Star Chosen science fiction novel. It took quite a while to draw this action-packed cover. In retrospect, it would have been a lot easier to work on all the fine futuristic cityscape details if I had made the pencil drawing on giant-sized paper. You might notice a few gaping holes in the diving spacecraft. Those holes are not due to manufacturer defect. The ship is under attack, as can be found in this all-ages space opera.

Picturing the likeness of the characters for the cover of this full length novel, I tried to capture the looks of a number of real people familiar and dear to me. The character at the front of the hovercraft is modeled after my dad. The guy on the statue is modeled after Jay Shelbrack. The guy falling out of nowhere is modeled after Greg Biggs. And the statue is... well I can't say, as that will give away an important surprise element of the book.

Notice that the original pencil book title logo is very different than the final version that ended up on the printed book and eBook. You can also compare how different this pencil image looks against the final color book cover by going to the Star Chosen sci-fi novel ordering page for this book.

Armed with Intergalactic Weapons is an original scifi story by Joe Chiappetta. It takes place in the Silly Daddy universe of an imaginary future, yet contains true accounts, slightly altered to fit into a science fiction setting. I've been working on the novel off and on for the past 12 years. While the book is not a sequel to the "Star Chosen" sci-fi novel, there are a few overlapping plot elements that the sci-fi loving fan will find intriguing. In fact, some might even call this new autobiographical science fiction book a pre-prequel to Star Chosen.

Definition of Autobiographical Science Fiction

For those that aren't familiar, "Autobiographical Science Fiction," as I am sure you could have guessed, is a sub-genre of Science Fiction, and an offshoot of Autobiography. It's basically true-to-life accounts of the author's life, but remixed into a sci-fi setting. Basically I took my life story (thus far) and rewrote it as if I had lived in the future within a science fiction timeline. All my life events, feelings, and thoughts that happened in this story are completely accurate, yet set in a sci-fi universe. So I would define autobiographical science fiction as a true life story written by an author about him or herself, yet set in a futuristic or technologically altered universe.

Armed With Intergalactic Weapons Not Of This World:

The autobiographical science fiction voyage of Silly Daddy
By Joe Chiappetta

I am one day old.

Newborn baby crying
My dad sees me for the first time through the hallway window of the maternity ward at Chicago Spaceport Hospital. This is my father's second child, but his very first son.

"Sons born in space are statistically more restless than sons born on the planets," says the medical robot to my dad. "Therefore, remember to instill discipline into your child. Statistics also show that eighty-four percent of..."
Spaceship interior
From a sterile corridor bursting with hi-tech medical equipment, my father interrupts, "Thanks Doc Tinhead. I'm going to see my kid now."

After taking a good look at me, my father turns to my grandfather and says with a proud smile, "It looks like my son boxed ten rounds with prizefighter Rocky Marciano... and lost!"

The reference to my slightly crooked nose combined with mention of the greatest ancient Italian-American boxer of all time is a good thing. It's a sign of parental approval, and big aspirations. From day one, as the hovering robot nurses clean the birthing fluids off of me, it seems to be decided; Joe Chiappetta is a fighter.

I am five years old.

colonized planetary cityscape
Welcome to the Borwyn, a densely populated, but usually peaceful planet. The floor of our apartment pod is covered with holographic pictures of superheroes. The green shag carpet is bursting with the most colorful heroic poses that twenty-five credits can buy.

I have downloaded the superhero images from the beginnings of my comic eBook collection and projected all the characters out onto the carpeted living room floor. You can barely walk in here without stepping through one of these full color 3D heroes: Moon-Spider Man, Subspace Mariner, Byte-Man, Super-Robo Man, Captain Earthica, the Fantastic Fandroids, the Bio-Hulk, Astro-Thor, and Waffle-Iron Man. It is such a brilliant sight.
Waffle-Iron Man about to flatten the Blueberry Astro-Toast Man
All my heroes... they almost come alive, fighting for what is right. They save the universe and oppose the forces of evil on a daily basis, most of them with intergalactic weapons not of this world. A thought occurs to me; "That is what I want to do."

As the years go by, and human colonization of space marches on, I will be stirring up a recurring question with an elusive answer; "How did everything change? I was supposed to be a hero."
~(+)~

I am eleven years old.

My family has relocated to Planet Roadview. The planet is not much different then neighboring Borwyn. But on Roadview, the virtual school district is a little better. At least that's what the search engines say.
Kid wrestlers so strong that they bust out of the mat
Many skills have I acquired to draw the super heroes I have admired for ages. However, drawing superheroes isn't actually the most action-packed thing for a young boy to do. My dad even reads me a report about the future of artists. It says that soon, people with no talent at all may be able to be fitted with implants to give them various skills. "So don't focus on art, Joey," says my dad, "because soon, everyone will be able to do that easily. Besides, a kid needs to be active, and tough."

Therefore, my dad enrolls me in the Comet-Cats Wrestling Club. We practice three or four nights a week, and mind you, this isn't easy virtual T-ball kid stuff. Our practices are physically demanding. The whole team goes home exhausted after every practice. It's one of the few sports on the planet that is still physical, not virtual.

Furthermore, this means that I can't participate in Battlestar Fantastica--the greatest space opera interactive movie series a boy could ever imagine! Only on Wednesday nights is this show on for free. All other nights, you have to pay. Therefore, every Wednesday evening, on the way to wrestling practice, I sigh and rationalize in my mind, "Becoming good or even great at something is not easy. It sure takes sacrifice. Is being able to throw another guy down to the ground nine different ways... Is that worth me not being able to watch guys in spaceships battle evil robots online?"

For now, that deep question goes unanswered, and I miss all the best free interactive shows of my formative years. They all seem to fall on a night when we have wrestling practice. However, I do become a lean, mean, fighting machine, qualifying for the State Tournament on Satellite Cicero three years in a row. I have big muscles, trophies, and a buzz cut to show for it.

My childhood becomes stamped with competitive and unforgettable statements from my dad; "When you take someone down in a headlock, Joey, don't just take them down like you're a ballerina. Make sure they remember you--make it painful, with a little knuckle in the side, or a chin in the back. Win or lose, your opponent will think twice about ever going up against you."
Me my Dad and little brother flying out to wrestling practice
My grappling success comes as no surprise. Between my dad, an ancient karate black belt, and my cousin, the smartest coach in the galaxy, plus their friend, DeeDee, the most charismatic and hard working robotic coach ever, I am poised for success. In fact, everyone these three coaches train becomes a formidable fighter, on and off the mat.

Nevertheless, by the middle of virtual high school, I start to burn out. I can beat most of my opponents, but so what? It's not like I'm fighting super villains or space pirates.

What's the point? Was wrestling success really worth giving up Battlestar Fantastica? Will I ever find out why those evil robots hate humans so much? Oh, what's the point of anything?

Walking away from the wrestling mat for the last time, with sore knees and a bad back, I begin to nurse a deadly combination of three character traits; I am tough, bitter, and ungrateful. Conclusively, I make a decision; "The next time I decide to fight for something, it had better be worth it!"

Silly Daddy Blasts Into Space with Star Chosen Sci-Fi Novel
March 31, 2010
North Riverside, IL, USA, Planet Earth

The latest major work from Silly Daddy cartoonist and Xeric Award winner, Joe Chiappetta, is not a comic book. It's a 67,000 word science fiction novel called "Star Chosen." The book took over five years to write and is a cross between Battlestar Galactica, Narnia, and of course, Silly Daddy.
Star Chosen, the 126 page, perfect bound softcover book retails for $10 US and is available now through Amazon at
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0964432323
(ISBN 978-0-9644323-2-1)

The book's back cover description follows:
"Deleting history was just the beginning. Blast off with STAR CHOSEN, a space opera of post-biblical proportions! After war, heartbreak, and the erasure of all history and culture, whose side will you fight on: the Proud... or the Chosen? In a time yet to come, the high-tech Faith War threatens to destroy all religions across the universe. One small yet bold group, known as 'the Chosen,' survives, but will they rebuild, or be torn to space dust across a cold universe?"

While the printed book is available through Amazon, the novel is also selling on Chiappetta's website as an e-Book in all the major e-Reader formats: ePub, Mobi, PDF and even as a TXT file. Star Chosen, the e-Book, sells for $5, and is  DRM-free. The book can be loaded onto multiple devices, and can be read on the Kindle, Sony E-Reader, iPhone, iPad, any computer, and any smartphone.

Chiappetta is not new to the sci-fi genre. His 1998 Xeric Award winning Silly Daddy graphic novel was also a major work of science fiction. Ironically, the imaginary gadgets depicted in that 1998 story resemble the devices that Chiappetta used in real life to create the 2010 Star Chosen novel. A Pocket PC was used to write the new story, and a Tablet PC was used to prepare the Star Chosen files for print production.

Going from the comics format to an all-text novel wasn't part of the original plan. Chiappetta started out on the project with the intent to tell the story as a weekly television series. Nevertheless, five years and 71 chapters later, Chicago area author, Joe Chiappetta, launches Star Chosen, a science fiction novel for all ages.

About:
Best known for his ground-breaking and typically off-beat coverage of family relationships, Joe Chiappetta is a husband and father of three. Joe has written and published over 20 Silly Daddy comic books, numerous zines, an ongoing webcomics blog, and now, a science fiction novel.

What is a Christian Novel?

The most direct way to determine if any work of fiction would be considered truly a Christian book, is to ask yourself this; If Jesus Christ were the actual publisher, would he endorse and wholeheartedly promote the book to the world? Search the scriptures to see if the book's values are in alignment with Jesus' values. Another way to assess a book's alignment with Christianity is to consider the underlying purpose of the book: what is being promoted therein. Would it repel or attract people to Christianity? What makes any novel a Christian novel is that the content presents an overall interest and intent to share the good news about Jesus Christ to the readers in an enlightening manner. This can be done in any one of three methods:

(1) Directly portraying Christians talking about Christian topics
(2) By example of the characters modeling Christ-like behavior
(3) Allegorically, where characters/events are symbolic of biblical elements

In the case of Star Chosen, all three methods are used in the novel, and I pray that Jesus Christ gives the book his blessing/approval.

Joe Chiappetta dares to write apocalyptic science fiction for the whole family! Think "Star Trek" meets Narnia.

Deleting history was just the beginning. Blast off with STAR CHOSEN, a family-friendly space opera! After war, heartbreak, attacks to your faith, and the erasure of all history and culture, whose side will you fight on: the Proud... or the Chosen?

Xeric Award winner and Ignatz Award nominee Joe Chiappetta crafts "Star Chosen," a science fiction epic for all ages. In a time yet to come, the high-tech Faith War threatens to destroy all religions across the universe. The term "Christian" has been completely eradicated from all culture in a war-torn galaxy.

One small yet bold group, known as "the Chosen," survives due to a miraculous favor from a mysterious military man--and the providence of God. In intergalactic combat and matters of destruction, this military man knows no equal. Yet on the home front, his family is falling apart. Unlike most families of the future, torn to bits by addiction to virtual reality game products, this man's family crumbles under his terrible involvement with weapons of experimental technology.

As the man continues to cross paths with the kind-hearted Chosen people, he dreams for a chance at redemption with his wife and daughter, who have disappeared to an unknown planet. He's all too aware that his journey may be shattered by a futuristic conspiracy full of intrigue and high-tech secrecy.

Themes infused into this biblically inspired sci-fi journey include prejudice, perseverance, technology obsession, fighting to follow God's word, effective and accountable leadership, overcoming deceit, the great commission, great faith, courage, godly division, and not conforming to the foolish patterns of this world.

This is action packed, thought provoking Christian science fiction with a message to inspire and convict. Be prepared to read this faithful adventure cover to cover, as readers say they can't put it down. As biblical speculative fiction goes, Star Chosen will take you on a space flight that will challenge your faith and entertain you at the same time.

Silly Daddy Artwork for Sale

Silly Daddy Artwork for Sale - comic by Chiappetta

For those who want to purchase original cartoon artwork from me, now there is a quick and easy way to know which cartoon art is for sale and what's not. Look for the label at the bottom of each post. I have tagged all the posts on this site that contain for sale artworks on paper with the tag, "Artwork for Sale." So happy shopping.

My artwork is collected internationally and even Quentin Tarantino's mom owns some (I'm not kidding!). Act now! You can own a Chiappetta original too.

Speaking of artwork, in this post, a green alien with squid-like multiple legs lands in a downtown metropolis, gets out of his little flying saucer and declares with urgency, "Take me to your artwork for sale."

"I wonder if crayon scribbles on scratch paper count?" thinks an onlooking little boy as all the adults stare in shock.
