A World Without Science Fiction

A World Without Science Fiction

Ink brush and marker on 8.5" x 11" paper by Joe Chiappetta 2011

If you like this comic you should buy the eBook in which this comic appears: Silly Daddy in SPACE comic. This particular illustration came out of a question I posted in the Amazon.com science fiction forums. What I wrote was this: "I just had a strange thought and wondered how this group would respond. How different do you think the world would be if there was no such thing as science fiction? Would life be better, worse, less technically advanced, boring, etc?"

My query brought forth many thoughtful and entertaining answers until one fellow got off on a totally unrelated tangent and started thrashing the Bible as a book full of horrors. After careful consideration, I decided that I had a responsibility, since I started the topic, to stand up for truth and correct the misinformation and half-truths that this cynical fellow was spreading about the word of God. I responded, as nicely as possible, with a brief statement about how the scriptures are only full of horrors for people who refuse to follow God.

Thereafter, a number of mockers verbally attacked me for my faith with their false courage that comes from being behind a computer screen for too long, and the topic got completely off track. The whole ordeal was a test to my patience and kindness. In order to remove the sour taste from my mouth, I prayed and then came up with this funny comic that answers the original question I posed in the forum. The comic was my attempt at turning a distasteful situation into a good memory. Despite the conflict, it is my way of expressing that verbal persecution is not going to rob me of my joy.

Aboard their spaceship docked at a space station, a woman says, "I wonder what life would be like in a world without science fiction."

The man replies, "We would most certainly still be cruising around the galaxy in horse and buggy."

I should also give thanks to my son Luke for helping on this comic illustration. I told him to design a spaceship out of Legos so I can draw a unique ship in the background. He did so and I drew his creation into this comic. You can see it overlapping the center of the right-most planet.

Star Chosen scifi novel on Bestseller List

Star Chosen characters Darla and Archilli

My sci-fi novel Star Chosen just climbed to #31 in the top Bestselling eBooks on Amazon under "Christian science fiction"

What I think makes a science fiction novel great must include the following: Conflict and resolution in a futuristic setting that opens areas of the reader's mind to new and useful insights. It's one of the goals I was aiming for when writing this book.

Silly Daddy Repossessed

Silly Daddy Repossessed

Ink pens and markers on 4.5" x 3.5" paper by Joe Chiappetta 2011

One man riding the Chicago public transportation system says to a woman, "I ride the bus every day this year because my car got repossessed."

"At least it wasn't demon-possessed," said the woman in consolation.

"That was last year," replied the man.

This is one of the many comics in my eBook Debt-Busters. It's a short eBook, heavily illustrated on how to better manage your money, from a Christian perspective. For more details on Debt-Busters, go here.

Take a Bite from the Fortunes of Space

The Fortunes of Space

This comic panel is one of the many sci-fi related comics in my Silly Daddy in SPACE comic book. So far, the book has gotten a five star review on Amazon. Click here to order that eBook.

How did this particular and slightly surreal comic panel come about? A long time ago, I remember somehow coming across fortune cookies which were all different colors--green, red, and blue. They tasted the same as the regular kind, but were so much more fun to eat. I can't remember if this was in Chicago's Chinatown, or in San Francisco. Nevertheless, that experience prompted the baking of this crispy comic.

A man riding for the first time on a ship shaped exactly like a certain oriental treat makes a curious statement; "Hmm, I thought for sure this ship would be filled with vague little predictions on slips of paper."

Apparently, one new passenger aboard the US Fortune Cookie had a problem with taking things too literally.

All kidding aside, I don't believe in fortunes. In fact most of the time I ignor the slips of paper inside those delicious little cookies. I believe in Jesus Christ.
